St. Pope John XXIII was a very humble man. Many of the things he did to show that humility are being done by our current pope. For example, one of John XIII’s first acts was to visit a large Roman prison. He stated that he came to understand how series jail time was as a boy because his cousin served time. The papal paper reported the visit but not the statement about his cousin. They thought people would be scandalized. Does our family background embarrass us? Do we pretend to be more than we are to impress people?
