January 19, 2018 (1 Sam 24:3-21)

For those of you who are not from Memphis or West Tennessee, you don’t know why there hasn’t been a blog the last few days. If you are from this area, you know that things have been shut down due to snow, ice, and frigid temps. So, we are back.

In today’s First Reading, David has an opportunity to kill King Saul who has been trying to kill David. David drew a distinction between the person of Saul and the role he played, “God’s anointed.” Messiah, Christ are the translations for “God’s anointed.” The King of Israel was anointed. We were anointed, too. As babies at our baptism; at Confirmation when we were “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” I was further anointed at Holy Orders. So, we are all meant to be another Messiah to our world. We are meant to be another Christ in how we treat others. We have a “royal dignity.”
