Today’s passage is a prime example of what Scripture scholars call an intercalation, or more informally, a Markan sandwich. Mark likes to begin story A, interrupts it with story B, which he completes, then returns to complete story A. (Thus, the sandwich metaphor. Today’s two healings are joined by the number 12, as in years the woman was ill and years the little girl was alive. By doing the intercalation, Mark wants you to see both stories as one story.) Jesus healed many people and would touch them, the man born blind, lepers, etc. People wanted to touch Him as power would go out from Him, like the woman in today’s story. Jesus is still trying to touch us. The most direct way He does it today is through the Sacraments. Do you believe Jesus is touching you when you receive a Sacrament?
