Easter WK 6B (2018) (John 15:9-17)

The Gospel passage is a continuation of last Sunday’s Gospel of the Vine and the Branches. Remember: it stressed the need to “remain” in Jesus a theme this Gospel continues to develop. “Remaining” appears 4 times. The way disciples remain united to Jesus is through “love” (mentioned 9 times). But, the agricultural metaphor of the vine and the branches is replaced with language that is more personal and intimate. It is deepened by the intimacy of “friendship.” Jesus is clearly insistent that His disciples love one another and live on in His love. He doesn’t merely urge His disciples to do so, He commands it!
