The theme in the readings is one of “rejection.” Jesus at His home in Nazareth and Jeremiah in the court of the House of the Lord. In Jesus’ case: “familiarity breeds contempt.” The people of Nazareth thought they knew who Jesus’ family was and a carpenter’s son shouldn’t be talking or acting the way He does. Jeremiah has a message of “gloom and doom” for the Temple and Jerusalem. If they were rejected, is it any surprise that we are rejected when we preach the gospel?
