July 26, 2017 (Feast of St. James)

Today we honor the brother of St. John who along with St. Peter formed the special group of three Apostles. They were with Jesus at His Transfiguration and in the garden the night He was betrayed. In the Synoptics, there are two strange incidents that show them in a mirky light: calling down thunder on those who would not support Jesus and asking to be at Jesus’ right and left hand in the Kingdom. The fact that James was the first to suffer martyrdom of all the Apostles shows how far he changed in light of the Resurrection. We can change too. Maybe, we are prideful or boastful, but, with Jesus’ help, we can change like James did.
